Melodee Strong received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Illustration and her Masters degree in Arts Education at the University of Minnesota. She is a freelance illustrator and community artist that has illustrated 9 children’s books. She also teaches for Minneapolis Public Schools and for Continuing Education at MCAD. Melodee has participated in many gallery exhibitions, book readings, as well as presented to an array of audiences throughout her career, including Target’s Children’s Book Festivals in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York, and Boston. Her illustrations have received several awards from the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles and the Society of Illustrators New York, and received Teacher’s Choice, Mom’s Choice, and Moonbeam Awards for her illustrations in children’s books. She has completed over 50 murals and large-scale projects in the Twin Cities and Jamaica.

Lord, Hear Our Prayer

Part of a series of paintings created for a show at the Hennepin Theater Trust in downtown Minneapolis representing Black women’s church hats in all their glory! Melodee wanted to focus on the various ways women pray using their hands. A stain glass background is carried throughout the series. In this painting, the stain glass is that of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL when 4 little girls were killed in a church bomb in 1963. This painting is 24 inches by 36 inches and has a profile of 1.5 inches. It is painted with acrylic. No prints are available at this time.

Mama (artist prints)

Created for the Social Justice Billboard Project in response to the George Floyd murder in south Minneapolis, this painting represents the pain and suffering of Black mothers when faced with the reality that their son has been murdered by police. This painting is in honor of George Floyd calling out for his mother as he was losing his breath under the knee of former police office Chauvin. This illustration is currently on display at the George Floyd memorial at the corner of 38th and Chicago. The original painting is sold. The prints are 28 inches wide by 16 inches high.

Mueres Fuertes

“Strong Women” represent the women of North Minneapolis. The first painting in a series representing the diverse community of north Minneapolis. This painting was created for a project wrapping utility boxes along the West Broadway corridor in north Minneapolis. Prints also available.
