Monica Helland is an artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Monica received a BFA in Graphic Design from MCAD in 2010 and currently balances her time as a graphic designer and printmaker.
Monica loves the intersection of folklore and visual design and capturing specific monsters themes from folktales in her work. She is a member of North Star Printmakers Studio, located in the Casket Arts building, where she designs and screen prints.

Cat of Ulthar Ornament

“The Cats of Ulthar” is a short story written by H.P. Lovecraft in June 1920. In the tale, an unnamed narrator relates the story of how a law forbidding the killing of cats came to be in a town called Ulthar.

The Hodag is a “fearsome critter” said to resemble an ox but with a frog-like head. It is unique to Rhinelander, Wisconsin and has been part of local legend for a long time.

In Central European folklore, Krampus is a horned figure described as “half-goat, half-demon”. Legend has it that throughout the Christmas season, misbehaved kids are beaten with birch branches or can disappear, stuffed into Krampus’ Sack and hauled off to his lair.
